‘Unprogressive’: Theories of Architectural Viewpoints in Modern CivilisationAntonio Tan

Antonio Tan, public intellectual, and director at AUA (Atelier of Urban Architecture) will present his first lecture in China for RAS Shanghai.
Architecture is indeed a profession that is at the same time flourishing and suffering. ‘Unprogressive’ is a term that resonates with the discrepancy of the profession at many levels, since most practicing architects remained novel and indifferent to how unprogressive civilisation has became.
Being critical is not a particularly courageous position in a risk averse society. Contrarian thinker Antonio Tan believes that it is imperative for an architect to direct criticism at his own works as well as the context within which he operates. In this lecture, Antonio will discuss some of his current preoccupations such as preservation, and his intellectual engagement with disciplines including politics and contemporary art.
