‘Apart Together’ takes up some of the key themes our Film Club has been following across the decades, but in a contemporary context. These include Shanghai itself, the movement of people into and out of Shanghai, and changing political times. The film is set in Shanghai and deals with the emotional results of the return of a KMT veteran from Taiwan to resume his relationship with his pre-49 love, who is long married to a supporter of the Communist regime. The director's previous film – ‘Tuya’s Wedding’ - was also shown at Film Club and received much acclaim.
