Dr. CRISTINA BERTRAND

YI JING

Cristina Bertrand’s book: Yi Jing: Image, Concept and Action presents the images (hexagrams) and concepts of the ancient book of Chinese wisdom Yi Jing and offers a distilled essence of their meaning, along with poems and paintings based on those images and concepts. To facilitate using the book for consultation, chapter subtitles provide a clue as to their content. Each chapter begins with a paragraph related to the natural image (as depicted by the painting) and is followed by a paragraph explaining the concept behind the image. The final paragraph serves as a general guide to action. The paintings and poems facilitate the union of concept and image, deeply impressing the essential wisdom of the Yi Jing in the mind.

A native of Spain, Cristina Bertrand earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy and Letters at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. Her book, Yi Jing: Image, Concept and Action, was based on her doctoral dissertation, an interdisciplinary research in the fields of philosophy, history, social sciences and art.

Dr. Bertrand is an internationally recognized scholar and artist and has completed more than 480 paintings exhibited in galleries in Spain, the United States and Europe. During her Studies in Fine Arts, she received two Golden Campaniles awards from the Siena International Art

School. Her style of painting is expressionistic, using strong colors and unusual composition to portray the “internal” life of the object represented. Expressionism requires a deep knowledge of the subject, and the paintings in her book –symbolic expressions of each chapters´ meaning- reflect Cristina Bertrand’s rigorous study of the Yi Jing.

After leaving Spain, Dr. Bertrand lived 20 years in the United States, in Los Angeles, New York and Miami Beach. She presently lives in Shanghai, where she lectures on the Yi Jing and presides over her company, Cristina Bertrand (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd., which produces artistic perfumes, jewelry and fashion
