Though he lives in Beijing, he has based numerous works on life in Henan, including Dream of Ding Village. He entered the army in 1978 and graduated from Henan University in 1985 with a degree in politics and education. In 1991, he graduated from the People's Liberation Army Art Institute with a degree in Literature.Dream of Ding Village is an account of a blood-selling ring in contemporary China. Based on a real-life blood-selling scandal in eastern China, the book is the result of three years of undercover work by Yan Lianke, who worked as an assistant to a well-known Beijing anthropologist in an effort to study a small village decimated by HIV/AIDS as a result of unregulated blood selling. While based in Beijing between 1996 and 2015, she translated over independent Chinese films and documentaries, dozens of scripts, short stories, essays and poems and 2 novels. In 2015 Ms. Carter relocated to the USA.
