In the past three decades, increased attention was paid to Chinese tradition by Western Scholars for the study of green philosophy, ecology, and environmental ethics, as China accumulated abundant records in its long history relevant to these topics.In this lecture, Dr. Li will first introduce the recent scholarship in environmental ethics, and then share with the audience some stories or passages from stories, selected from early myth as well as contemporary Chinese literature. Audience will be invited to take turn to read and discuss the stories. Topics include symbolism of environmental protection, animal rites, human-Nature relations, natural resources, religion and environmentalism.
In his 12 years of residence in the United States, Yanfeng Li received his second B.A. (1995) in English literature and an M.A. (1999) and Ph.D. (2005) in Chinese literature from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He also taught Chinese language at the University of Pennsylvania.He and his family moved back to Shanghai in 2005, and is currently the Academic Director of the Advanced Chinese Studies program at the CIEE
StudyCenter at EastChina
NormalUniversity in Shanghai. His position includes teaching traditional and modern Chinese literature to American college students attending the CIEE study center.
