A guided visit to MAUS/HUI ZHEN WU with Mr. Zhao Wen Long
China’s traditional architecture has been under increasing threat in recent years as China’s drive to modernity has swept away many ancient structures along with their cultural, technical and historical significance. In an effort to preserve this architectural heritage Mr. Zhao Wen Long has spent 15 long years in building up Museum of Art and Urbanity Shanghai (MAUS) with its collection of Ming and Qing dynasty houses complete with traditional gardens, statues and steles and furniture from southern China designed to recreate the atmosphere of the times. Teams of artisans conversant with the skills and knowledge assist his project in restoring damaged buildings that are transported beam by beam and brick by brick to the museum.
Mr. Zhao is fond of saying, ‘things do not happen by chance.’ The grandson of a horticulturist, his appreciation of gardening and his passion for furniture was acquired as a youngster whilst playing in the gardens of old Shanghai houses. He began purchasing antiques and building up his understanding of their significance following the Cultural Revolution and today one of his main aims is to highlight the importance of maintaining Chinese culture to administrators and to the new generation.
Mr. Zhao will be our personal guide for a two hour tour of his one hectare property. He will talk about his background, his experience as a collector and about the purpose of his work.A hearty lunch will be included in the MAUS tearoom.
