The Royal Asiatic Society is pleased to have Nicolas Grevot as the Art Focus guest lecturer as we explore the history and design of the 1933 Old Milfun or the “Slaughterhouse Building.”  This building complex has a unique history and continues to be shrouded in mystery with very little resources and documentations available in English.  We do know that there were only 2 other buildings of this type in the world, but they have both disappeared. Only the one in Shanghai remains extant. Inaugurated in 1933, hence its name inscribed on the building, the structure is a one-of-a-kind monument remnant of a lost time dedicated to art deco architectural style, reflecting the aspiration in the early 20th century world in search for modernity, technicity and innovation. Today, the complex is undergoing through a new life as a creative and commercial center. Nicolas Grevot will lead us through this iconic building, outlining the historical significance and its decorative motifs, to discover its history and its hidden beauties and secrets.
