Julie Chun will provide an art historical analysis for understanding the role of sculpture in society. Through a brief survey, she will introduce the canonical sculptures that emerged from early civilisations of the Western and Eastern world to modern times and discuss how they came to be appropriated as symbolic monuments for framing state identity. Within this context, she will then examine some of the visible public sculptures in Shanghai and Beijing.  She will provide pivotal clues as to why many of these markers can be an eye-sight or an eye-sore despite their visual appearance.

Julie Chun holds an MA in Art History.  She has taught surveys of Eastern and Western Art History at San Jose State University in California.  She currently organizes monthly art forums and delivers lectures to RAS, SEA, AWCS and various other expat associations.  Her reviews and art articles have been published by the Spirit, Courier, Randian as well as academic journals.  Her personal research lies in examining the historical relationship of material culture to society within the light of recent scholarship to better understand the context of the object's production and consumption.
