My Country and My People
Lin Yutang (1895-1976)
RAS member Raymond Kolter discussion leader
Lin Yutang was a Western educated translator, linguist and inventor. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation. Although his major works have remained in print, Lin is a thinker whose place in modern Chinese intellectual history has been overlooked until recently. (Wikipedia)
Published in English in America in 1935, My Country and My People made headlines. For the first time a Chinese wrote a book in English about China and the Chinese. The sympathetic reaction of many Americans to China's plight in the struggle against Japan made this book a bestseller. In easy to read language Lin describes the Chinese mind, their history, philosophy, characteristics, etc. The descriptions are the author's own opinions, but it is a testament to his brilliant mind and perceptive eyes that much of the book is still valid today.
