LIZ HINGLEY
Portrait de Villes: Shanghai
“I moved to Shanghai in July 2013, twenty years since line 1 of Shanghai’s metro opened. It is now the second largest metro system in the world. I was fascinated by how its development has dramatically changed the cities social, economic and geographical structure in the past twenty years. The 12 metro lines transport an average of more than 7 million people daily. Twenty years ago, Line 1 handled just 1.06 million riders in the whole year.” Liz Hingley
In this lecture for RAS, acclaimed photographer Liz will talk about her recently released photography book from the Portrait de Villes collection. In order to depict the city from a fresh perspective, Liz travelled to the end of each Metro line and photographed what she discovered there.

 About the Series
In 2007, be-pôles created an editorial department with a collection of travel notebooks entitled Portraits de Villes. Four cities, four photographers, four portraits. The beginning of a long voyage. A precious one.
Adhering to its own typographic culture which combines elegance and simplicity, equilibrium and homothety, precision in details and proportions, be-pôles is adding its contribution to the book of photographs.
Echoing the famous Moleskine notebooks that every globe-trotter carries with him on his travels, the cities of Portraits de Villes have their own identity according to the vision of each of the photographers who have been carefully chosen by the be-pôles team for the richness and sensitivity of their visual vocabulary.
