Ann Hui is a Hong Kong film actress and director. The RAS film club showed her 2006 film “The postmodern life of my Aunt”, also staring Chow Yun-Fat. Her last film “A simple life” (2011) with Andy Lau and Deanie Ip won several awards in Asia and Europe.
“Love in a Fallen City” is Ann Hui’s first adaptation of an Eileen Chang story. The second one was “Eighteen Springs” (1997).
The film is set in 1940s Shanghai and Hong Kong and follows Bai Liu-Su (Cora Miao) who is an introverted divorcée. Her large, extended family feels she has shamed them through divorce. Fan Liu-yuan (Chow Yun-Fat), a Malayan businessman visiting from Hong Kong becomes interested in her. They meet again in Hong Kong with the Japanese invasion looming. It is only through surviving war-torn Hong Kong as civilians that the two realize that they truly love each other.
