Michelangelo Antonioni: "Cina - Chung Kuo"

Apologies from AdHoc Study Group for the late notice, but despite another cancellation, we will go forward with a very interesting documentary on Jan 15th at Melange Oasis, 7:00 for 7:15.

Forty-two years ago, Italian film maker, Michelangelo Antonioni, was invited by Mao Zedong to document the Cultural Revolution.  He and his crew were given limited access to several cities and regions in China and filmed for eight weeks.  Despite the minders, Antonioni was able to capture "real life" in China, much of it unchanged from decades, even centuries, ago.  When the documentary, "Cina - Chung Kuo", was finished, Mao and his wife were outraged at the results and the film was banned for the next 32 years.  The film has three parts.  We will view one of the three and discuss the artistic intentions of the film maker, the contextual history of the time (1972), and the outcome Mao expected and why he was disappointed, even outraged.

Please come along early to have dinner or a drink at Melange Oasis.
