Public and Independent Art Spaces in Shanghai

-
In the recent years, Shanghai has received much attention for its culture of museum building. Grand and monumental spaces have been the sites for exhibitions showcasing world-renown artists, which have received ubiquitous coverage by domestic and foreign presses. Yet, under the radar are spaces that seek to independently support provocative artistic exhibitions and insightful programming to offer the public more than meets the eye. Art Historian Julie Chun has been chronicling the challenges and possibilities of public art in Shanghai for over four years. She invites the following key members from Shanghai's unique and autonomous artistic spaces that acknowledge the disparate identities of the viewing public to discuss their striving for expanding the cultural literacy of the community at large: Guo Cheng (Executive Director of Chronus Art Centre), Wang Weiwei (Curator of MoCA Shanghai), Yu Ji (Artist and Founder of am Art Space), and Gong Siyue (Deputy Director of Ray Art Center).
