ABOUT THE FILM
Last month, RAS Film Club saw The Shanghai Gesture, which gave a mid-twentieth century Hollywood viewpoint on the decadence of Concession Period Shanghai. Temptress Moon, in part, reflects on the decadence of Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s by a 5th Generation Chinese filmmaker. It provides an interesting contrast and also stands alone as one of the few Chinese films of the late twentieth century to feature Shanghai.
Following Chen Kaige's success with Farewell My Concubine, he reunites Gong Li and Hong Kong idol Leslie Cheung in this big budget film that was in competition at Cannes, banned in China and made sumptuous by Chris Doyle's cinematography.
