It’s a material city…with bales of material wealth. Explore some of Shanghai’s rich textile collections during the RAS Textile Day.
For millennia China has been at the forefront of innovation in textile technology. The tour begins at The Chinese Costume Museum of Donghua University, an institution long recognized as a cradle of learning for textile professionals. This prestigious collection of historic and minority garments, and artifacts showcasing China’s technological achievements in textile production, was until recently open only to researchers and students.
We will continue to “Carpetstan,” a small French Concession treasure trove of rugs from Xinjiang and Central Asia. Owner Aziz Idris will share his knowledge of how the area’s great cultural diffusion (including Greek, Arab, Mongol and Han Chinese identities has left its mark on the textile arts.
We will lunch at InterfaceFLOR and hear about this company’s initiatives in green technology and sustainability, before continuing to Metersbonwe’s Nanhui head quarters, to tour its impressive CostumeMuseum. For several years this leading casual wear retailer has been heavily investing in the collection and preservation of Chinese historic and ethnic clothing, and has been building an internationally admired group of museums for public display.
Tour leader Dr. Lindsay Shen is currently principal lecturer in the Events Management program at the Sino-British College Shanghai. Previously, she was the Director of a research museum with a large textile collection at the University of Minnesota.
