They Call It Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain

-
Released in 2012, They Call It Myanmar is the result of two years of clandestine shooting in “the second-most isolated country on the planet”. Directed by American novelist and filmmaker Robert Lieberman, the film is set against the backdrop of stark economic inequality and a near half-century of military dictatorship. It intersperses explanations of Myanmar’s history with discussion of current topics, musing on the religiosity and tenacity of the Burmese people in the face of severe deficiencies in education and health care. Also included in the film is an extended interview with Aung San Suu Kyi, the country’s longtime opposition leader and current de facto head of state, who at the time of filming had recently been released from house arrest.
