Some New Frenchtown Lanes, a Preview of
A walk with TESS JOHNSTON
The circular walk starts on a bustling street corner of a major road and then winds through the tranquil web of lanes that link the south-running streets of Shaanxi Lu, Ruijin Lu, Sinan Lu and Jiashan Lu. On Sinan Lu you will walk past the new Rue Massanet, an upscale redevelopment by Luwan District, then move westward via Jiwnde Lu and Shaoxing Lu to the newly-developing Jiashan Market complex of shops and restaurants (yet another Xintiandi and/or Tianzifang?), where the tour will end. You may wish to join some of us for lunch at the Melange Oasis, an Austrian cafe in the market
Tess Johnston first came to Shanghai in 1981 to work at the American Consulate General and in 1996, after over thirty years in the diplomatic service, she retired and stayed on to research, write, and lecture. She and her co-author,
